What hiring managers actually test
Most SQL interviews reward clear thinking and correct results, not clever syntax. Expect joins, aggregations, window functions, and a dose of business logic.
A 7-day prep structure
- Day 1–2: Warm up with
SELECT, filters,GROUP BY, andHAVING. - Day 3–4: Join patterns — inner, left, and avoiding duplicate inflation.
- Day 5: Window functions —
ROW_NUMBER, running totals, cohort-style questions. - Day 6: Time series questions — gaps, retention-style prompts.
- Day 7: Two timed mocks, verbalize your plan before you type.
During the interview
State your assumptions, sketch the grain of the result set, and validate edge cases (nulls, duplicates, time zones).
